About

Professor Parker is a consultant physician at Barnsley District General Hospital where he is lead clinician in Medicine for Older People. He works in the local health community develop strategy and services for older people which function across the traditional boundaries between health and social care and acute and community services.

Parker trained in Geriatric Medicine and Experimental Gerontology and has an established research programme on health services for older people. His research interests are focused on care transitions and their associated health technologies (intermediate care, hospital discharge, rehabilitation, case management). He is clinical director of the Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing.

Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing

Sheffield has a well established, interdisciplinary research community focused directly on enhancing the quality of life in old age, predominantly located in the Sheffield Institute for Studies in Ageing.

The excellence of the work in Sheffield was recognised in 2002 with the award of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education which acknowledged: “An impressive record of high quality research that is focussed directly on enhancing the quality of life in old age. Its exemplary inter-disciplinary approach has had a real impact on the development of public policy leading to improved services for older people, especially in health and social care”.

The group provides international leadership in interdisciplinary gerontology, hosting major EU and UK Research council collaborations on ageing research.
